My Hometown Has Been Co-Opted By Conservatives, But LBC Values Live On

Having been born and raised in Long Beach, I was in for a shock in returning that I hadn't prepared for. I knew things had changed, because friends and family had told me about raising rents (no rent control) and disappearing arts, music and culture. But I also found that the epic laid back attitude of Long Beach has also been challenged. Oh no... At its core my city is still as popular as ever for subversive counter-culture, (Snoop Dog, Sublime) skateboarding, water adventures, culinary delight, adult education, and festivals. And you cannot even mention Long Beach, without mentioning the Queen Mary , which has a hotel and events park that is beloved to locals and visitors alike.

Through The Roots V.I.P. Experience Review, Federal Bar Long Beach, CA Mar. 22, 2017

Left to right: Taylor, Evan, Budda of Through the Roots These last couple years have been fun for reggae. As I settled back into living in my hometown of Long Beach, California, I have found many great reggae shows including live dub, conscious, and roots music events . Many of you may not know but Long Beach (aka LBC: Long Beach California) was a mainstay of live reggae in the early 90's, birthed Sublime, and has always had a ton of islanders as its inhabitants. Lucky us.

Long Beach Walk Through Video - April 2014 - By the Sea

Long Beach Pike April 2014 by Frankie Tease I'm back in touch with my hometown Long Beach, CA. During my recent trip there, I took some photos and video of what's going on during Saturday 4/5 and 6. There was a lot of preparation in progress for the Grand Prix next week, the Congressional Cup was there on the beach front, people were madly wake-boarding or windsurfing (I do not know the difference), and the sun was out accompanied by the famous ocean breeze. Hopefully this will tell some of the show goers to Ink N Iron what the town is like before their arrival for the June car show and music festival at the Queen Mary. The Queen is pictured in the video too.

Rehab Celebrates its 10 year Anniversary with "Sublime with Rome" at Pool Party, Las Vegas

Eric Wilson (bass), Josh Freese (drums),  Rome Ramirez (vocals/guitar) now make up  Sublime with Rome. On red carpet for Rehab 10. The DJ music rang out as cheering bikini and beach-attire-wearing fans gathered for the Sublime with Rome performance Sunday Apr. 21, 2013. Sublime with Rome set the tone for a summer experience with all the references to Long Beach anyone could fit into a musical set. Original founding member Eric Wilson (bass) is the only one left of the power trio, but the band plays music of deceased Bradley Nowell (1996) with new members Josh Freese (drums since '12) and front man Rome Ramirez (vocals/guitar, since '09). The music of Sublime is kept alive and in tact, as anthem-like songs ring out during their performance and at least 1000 people sing every word. It's what they grew up on around Cali.  The occasion was the 10 year anniversary of Las Vegas's most naughty pool party, Rehab, and the best and first ever dayclub. Lasting du
